All that and a Bag of Chips: The Clover 24 Mural
I was eager to work with Bob and Ilaamen Pelshaw on a mural for Clover24, a creative working space located at 2200 S 24th Street (24th and Martha) in Omaha, Nebraska.
The building served as a factory for Kitty Clover Potato Chips, once the largest potato chip factory in the country.
I collaborated with Bob and Ilaamen to execute a pop-art rendition of the vintage packaging of the Kitty Clover potato chip bag; a nod to the building’s history.
Planning
The mural was to be located in the north entrance over a stairwell.
The walls are ceramic tile and we landed on the dimensions, style and color. I always begin with cleaning and priming the surface. It was also important to protect the surrounding area so that the surrounding tile was preserved. The actual design was approximately 14 ft high and 8 ft wide.
Process
Because of the size and location of the mural, the work was painted in stages so that the scaffolding could be moved once.
I use a projector to create a paper pattern. Once the pattern is drawn, a pounce wheel is used to perforate the design. A bag of chalk pounded over the pattern to transfer the image to the wall.
Once the pattern is transferred, it can be painted.
To protect the mural, a protective clear coat is added once work is complete.
